Fornasetti
Perhaps there is no place in your life for a $13,000 table covered in butterflies but hopefully there's room for an appreciation of the whimsy of Mr. Piero Fornasetti.
Fornasetti was an Milanese decorator, interior designer, sculptor, etc who was thrown out of the Milanese Brera Art Academy for insubordination in the 1930s. Don't you like him already? He started a studio in the '40s that his son still operates today.
I like Fornasetti as an accent piece to cut stiffness (ie in a room full of your grandmother's furniture) or to up the glamor quotient in a room furnished with good-looking but low-end pieces like CB2 or West Elm.
Enjoy the hunt for vintage Fornasetti (during office hours: 1stdibs.com) or check out Fornasetti's new production pieces and re-Editions of past designs (gorgeous screens with Roman ruin details or funny face plates) @ Fornasetti.com. Purchase @ Barneys top floor, mossonline.com or unicahome.com...some of my favorite sites to spend hours e-browsing.
For now, Fornasetti is on my "Wish List". I LOVE his stuff.
